top 10 trends

Image hosting by Photobucket

The current issue of ARTNEWS has an interesting article on the top 10 trends in contemporary art. You will have to pick up a copy to read everything but to sum up:

1. artworks dealing with ritual, meditation and the effort to heal the world

2. poetic-obsessive-sprawling installations

3. videos that blur the line between fact and fiction

4. postmodern mannerism- like the pic above- sweet, sad, repulsive, cute, creepy..

5. graffiti-hip-hop-influenced works

6. imagery from the civil war and other dark moments in history

7. fabrics, beads, clay and other craft materials

8. skeptical artists in the pursuit of perfect world - think rainbows and peace

9. psychedelic esthetic - think "Mushroom Room" currently on display at LA MoCa

10. knights, princesses, and shipwrecks that receive a 21st century makeover

I haven't read ArtNews in years. It's amazing how much it reads like People magazine. And shamelessly describing contemporary art in terms of trends! Doesn't anyone paint anymore? (That is, without resort to scrotums and other sensationalist ironies.)
