auerbach is one of my favorites, he really only lets about 12 paintings out of his studio a year, he works them to death. I would say though auerbach has been painting fairly brightly for 20 years or more. I know that in his earliest works the darker pigments were the cheaper ones and that helped to account for the darkness in his paintings, also, know that his favorites are the old masters and that he is interested in light.

Its nice to see that the new Auerbach work is colorful. Most of the paintings and drawings that I have seen of his were always so muddy and dark.

Robert Hughes championed Frank Auerbach, wrote about him, got him the publicity that he so richly deserved. Auerbach is a great painter.
