I am starting to think that what detroit needs are better curators! we have good artists but these recent shows look terrible. that is just bad curation.
does anyone else think that Jack Johnson's work is a little too close to Basquiat's? I mean, even down to the stretched canvas with the wood sticking out, and the crossing out of text. Does that bother anyone else or is it just me?
yep...looks like a 555 show alright. Their shows are consistantly bad. For a gallery that charges admission to the openings, it's never been worth the money to go. There is so much potential with that space, but it's like they blindly pull artists work out of a hat and throw a show together. The paintings are often extremely mediocre and poorly stretched/warped. I always feel like the 2-d work looks like it was done by angsty teenagers. I really wish they would put more thought into the work that goes up. They really need to get some quality artists on board.
