Thanks to Gilda for sharing this sad news. Never came across it anywhere else:
Elizabeth Murray, an artist who helped to reshape Modernist abstraction, died from complications of lung cancer in her home in upstate New York at age 66.
Murray, who died Sunday, featured unconventionally shaped or multi-panel canvases that fused Cubism`s broken art forms and Surrealism`s juxtaposed elements with a touch of humor, The New York Times reported Monday. Everyday household items such as coffee cups or tables moved across the canvas often as if caught in a vortex, her preferred effect.
Murray was one of a few women to ever have a retrospective spanning her 40-year career at New York`s Museum of Modern Art in 2006. In 1999 she was the recipient of a MacArthur Foundation 'genius' grant.
