sara blakeman: farewell exhibition

Sara Blakeman is off to china and this was her goodbye show....and the opening of Mitch Cope and Gina Reichert's new space in Hamtramck. Too bad I will be leaving Hamtramck...but the gallery space will be a great spot to keep another gallery going, especially with Design.99 almost next door! (If you're interested in taking over the space, email me)

I like blakeman's work, but how many times do I have to see this show?

Yes there was lots of the usual blobs but the "paintings" on the left were brand new and quite different than her usual 3-D stuff. And don't forget it was also her get-rid-of-my-old-art-cuz-i'm-moving-to-china show. Have fun in China Sara! Don't drink the water! Don't eat the dog! Chairman Mao forever!

I know you were trying to be funny, but it's not really something to joke about. chairman mao was an asshole. tourists are the only ones who buy shit with his ugly mug on it. the chinese remember the terrible old days and don't want anything to do with his crap - unless they can make a little american cash off of it to, you know, feed their families.

ps - this sara blakeman show sucked. the new paintings are boring. but hey, the chinese won't know!

jimmy k has clearly never been to china... mao is still respected and revered by many locals here in shanghai and around the country. in fact, as a foreigner here, it's pretty taboo to say anything contrary about mao. man, his face is still plastered on the main entrance to the forbidden city in beijing, in tianenmen square. in villages you'll walk by homes and see huge posters of him hanging over people's dining room tables. jimmy, don't talk out your ass if you're just guessing.
meanwhile, i also disagree with his feeling's about sara's work. here in shanghai sara put together one of my favorite shows that i've seen in five years in china.
