Steven Brown who graduated a few years ago will be heading to the west coast to attend Berkley. Also, Mark Sengbusch will be staying local and going to Cranbrook in the fall.

blogs to check out....

Both of these art blogs were just mentioned in Artnet as blogs containing actual content and not just rambles of daily personal stories.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I actually have already heard of PaintersNYC - I love this blog...great resource of current ny painters!!

This was the other blog mentioned...it was also written up in the nytimes - Gallery of the Absurd. This is great is you love Gawker and entertainment gossip mixed with an artist's perspective.

mocad in the news

In case you missed it...the detroit news also has a brief story on mocad.
Also, in metro times, rebecca has written up a story on mocad. As much as I am a huge supporter of mocad...it still feels a like those involved are like the mafia or the cool kids in high school that don't want you to question anything and if you do then they seem to give you weird glances or label you as a "problem". It just feels that they want to keep only those in the small "in" crowd involved.

glass month

I decided to check out one of the most nationally known glass gallery Habitat in light of michigan's glass month. I have to admit to not knowing a whole bunch about glass work and I certainly don't understand the market because pieces of glass are pricey...very pricey! Most of the pieces at Habitat are of known artists so the price tags range from $4,000 to $80,000! I enjoyed my visit much more than I expected and I encourage other glass skeptics to check out the space!

Of course I was drawn to the pieces that were more sculptural than vessel-like or crafty-decorative.

and no glass exhibit would be complete without a famous dale chihuly! I think this piece was only $40,000!

this piece was very labor intensive to say the least

even paintings that are made from glass

this one reminded me of an alien monster

I liked the all the bird pieces of glass on the wall...not as hot on the figure but the birds would make a really cool installation for a wall in your house!

Alley Culture

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I would say I am pretty hip to most galleries in the metro detroit area...but it was this gallery - Alley Culture - that caught me off guard. The gallery has been around for some time, since November of 1995 to be exact! Yes, that was even before I was out of high school! Even artists like Gordon Newton, Michael Mikolowski, Hugh Timlin and former detroit artist Peter Williams were in a group show there that was curated by Michelle Perron (ccs center gallery director). The gallery is more like a shed or a garage, very rough but it still does the job. An interesting place to check out and maybe stay for some donuts and coffee!

The show up till May 13 is American Icon, American Myth - Here's Your Story of Paul Bunyan. It is only open Friday and Saturday from 3-6pm. Artists include: jeff gerber, bob jordan, mattew hanna, james milostan, hiroko sakurai.

Art? It's like the sex trade

London artist Stella Vine, who has just opened up her own gallery, has this to say about the art world:

'When I went into the art world, I didn't have any knowledge of the little systems, all of the details of the interaction between you and the dealer. I just thought, if you make great art, you can put it anywhere, the environment is irrelevant. But it's not about that, it's about the psychological exchange. The art world is really exactly the same as the sex industry: you have to be completely on guard, you will get shafted, fucked over left, right and centre. And you will also meet charming, wonderful people like a rainbow at the end of the day.'....here is the whole story

Woodward Public Art Proposal

Image hosting by Photobucket

Check out this story in the news. Art pillars with themes evoking music, the labor movement, civil rights and technology to be placed in the median of Woodward? "The tab: between $100,000 to $125,000 per pillar." - but don't worry because they are hoping to make the money from federal grants and private donations. MOCAD took how long to get enough funds to get rolling...and open? Maybe instead of a pillar we could have the new contemporary museum last one year longer? It reminds me of the metal monstrosity that towers over I94 that was built all but for SuperBowl traffic from the airport.
