What Detroit isn't doing...

Everyone needs to read this article in the Times about museums attracting young collectors and hosting gala events that merge new collectors and emerging artists. Maybe this is something MOCAD could look into and learn from???

yes, maybe mocad could learn from it. it would be nice to let them know about it ... but since they meet in the woods late at night and have secret handshakes and blood rituals, I guess we'll have to hope the great ELDERS (and I mean ELDERS) figure it out on their own somehow.

Interesting story. Is there alot of "young money" out there in detroit? I mean younger people (with alot of disposable income)who are interested in the arts and not just collecting hockey pucks and baseballs with someone's name on them? It would be smooth if the DIA began moving in a younger, hipper direction.

there are a lot of younger collectors in detroit than what people realize. the reason is because a majority of them do, in fact, buy work from new york, l.a., chicago rather than here in detroit. there are also a lot of people that tend to collect without actually realizing that they are considered collectors. museums should also cater to those that are attempting to begin a collection. help guide and educate them. with the right encouragement they could be some of the major collectors of the future.

The DIA has the Founders Junior Council, a member group interested in collecting that has the high end age of 40. They have made some inroads in getting out and seeing what local artists are doing; last year they sponsored a party at the 2000 Brooklyn Alternative Work Site building, where all of the studios were open and works were available for sale.

I've been to Cranbrrok openings where there are lots of young richies all decked out in the designer duds and I'm guessing they collect, but like Anon said, probably from NY, LA etc
