In case you missed...

Finally the organizer of the "big"art night" at the Motor City Brewing Company had his turn. Graem Whyte certainly has had his mind on Chewbacca lately. Every small sculpture was a cast of a molded Chewbacca head on top of another miss-matched form such as a bird's body, a popsicle, a hammer and so on. The pieces, finely crafted, poked fun at the "chewy face" yet cleverly used a variety of materials to mold his collection. It feels like some strange world where Chewy is god and everywhere you turn...his face appears!

He does not know this, but I have enjoyed graems unique vision, play and use of material for awhile. These recent works are a good laugh
and insightful play / critique of culture and individuals.. I pick up on the ego commentary as well.
Graem is seemingly still pushing against product. I don't think it is helpful to describe the "nearly sold out motor city brew shows" as
a benchmark for local artists though. I have noticed many artists lately speaking in these terms.. Some of us have struggled to make shows work in the most unlikely places and towns in the metro area. We don't sell much nor
get any traffic especially from city dwellers. It is great that the motor city shows are challenging, bringing some people together and generating some revenue but there is ( or was ) a
vast variety of people and places in metro detoit which made it such a fertile place not to long ago.
I get the sense lately of a backing into a corner for Detoit Arts. Ironically, despite efforts, there is a stamp that has been formed I guess I could say. It is a predictable design with some variety, but defenitely the "D".
Lets get out there and impact our
culture with completely sincere works. Expand and not narrow. Unveil the infinite and stop the name calling.
