summer exhibition space!

I thought that now would be a good time to share with everyone what I have been up to lately - yacht club gallery! Our first show F*CK YOU / COMMENTARY CRITICISM is Saturday June 16th. We have an amazing mix of contemporary artists from all over the world showing with us....LA, Toronto, NY, Chicago, San Francisco, Germany.....and of course some detroiters! Stay tuned for more details, I couldn't be more excited!
*************
show one: F*CK YOU / COMMENTARY CRITICISM
yacht club gallery’s inaugural exhibition aims to showcase contemporary works that address or actively rebuff standard notions of critical evaluation and acceptance in art. But this is not a reactionary show; it is rather pro-active in its anti-critical stance. Included works both directly and indirectly address the role of criticism in the contemporary art community and its relationship to artists in the act of creation.

love the title. i remember finding glen friedman's book a few years ago at barnes-noble and being mildly shocked that they had it sitting out.

glen had his first FUCK YOU Exhibition at London England's Institute of Contemporary Art in January of 1997. The title itself is derived from the shows content -- including images from FUCK YOU HEROES and FUCK YOU TOO.

as i remember it the show traveled across the usa too, and the book was the catalogue.

Yes, part of a fine and growing tradition.

There was also the FUCK OFF exhibit a few years ago. So be wary of Ann's "finger" food!

In China of all places:

It was a notorious art exhibition which ran in opposition to the Shanghai Biennial Festival in 2000 at Eatlink Gallery in Shanghai, China.

I wiki'ed this:

The exhibition included 46 avant-garde artists’ works.

A catalog of this exhibition has been published. It is a small black book with the simple title "FUCK OFF" on the cover.

One of the most famous examples from this exhibition was the performance of "Eating People" by Zhu Yu. It consisted of a series of photographs of him cooking and eating what is alleged to be a human fetus. One picture, circulated on the internet via e-mail in 2001, provoked investigations by both the FBI and Scotland Yard.

The piece's canabilistic theme caused a stir in Britain when Yu's work was featured on a Channel 4 documentary exploring Chinese modern art in 2003.

In response to the public reaction, Mr. Yu stated, "No religion forbids cannibalism. Nor can I find any law which prevents us from eating people. I took advantage of the space between morality and the law and based my work on it". Yu has claimed that he used an actual fetus which was stolen from a medical school.

Many influential artists of the current Chinese art scene took part, many of whom have since been included in international exhibitions, catalogues, television documentaries, and Chinese work camps. The exhibition co-curators were Feng Boyi and artist Ai Weiwei.

I just heard that C-Pop is closing in June. So this is very welcome news. We've lost too many galleries over the last couple of years without replacements.

I hope it starts a new trend where young galleries rise up and give back to the community and over time finally help establish Detroit as the real art town it is!

Neither collectors nor artists have committed long term to Detroit in such a way. Not for a long time. Not for DETROIT.

I think Ann has proven she's a stand-out!

I wish Ann and the Yacht Club many years of success!!

I heard Ann might be leaving for LA in the fall.

Does this mean someone else will partner-up and keep the Yacht Club afloat?!

Gee what a surprise Cpop is closing. Their huge "revolutionary" show this year was letting young nobody artists show there work for a fee. I'm guessing Rick's attitude has finally dragged that place into the ground.
