Upon walking in to the show I glanced at the artwork and assumed I was going to dislike it. Once I actually got up there and stared at it for a little bit the work came alive. I really enjoyed a couple of them, and how nicely the proportions were carried out in the faces. I could've done without the glossy/sparliness of the material but I think it's a ballsy move on the artist's part.
Also enjoyed the experience of getting close to these works. I like a bit of the obsessive. Look forward to seeing more and perhaps with a wider range of materials.
I went to the show and was blown away by this work. There were two that I absolutely loved, both close up views of faces. Great use of different materials. I knew Russo from CCS, and am glad that she has ditched the paint in favor of the beads as a "painterly" medium. Lots of room for consistent developement here. I look forward to her next show! Her assemblage puts her solidly in the tradition of the Cass Corridor artists, specifically a wonderful one named Nancy Pletos. Also, Liza Lou and Joyce Scott. Keep up the good work, Kate!
