ARCHITECTURE: DIA expansion plays it too safe

This story in the Free Press is a little unsettling...could all that money invested into the DIA expansion be for a "common" design that won't cause people to "ooo" and "ahhhh"? Uh, oh? Why can't Detroit get it right? Can't we do something shocking and make a great extension to the DIA that would draw crowds? Well, let's all be happy that we are getting a new face and interior design to the faithful DIA!

I certainly agree that the new DIA expansion is relatively safe, and the Michael Graves version of that to boot.

However I honestly do not think the greater Detroit area would have responded well to anything more interesting! The days of Detroit being on the cutting edge of architecture are long gone ...
