chicago backyard art

The next few posts are from my trip to Chicago to see what was shakin' with the arts there.  Unfortunately, a lot of the big fall shows don't open till this coming Thursday so the galleries were tearing down their summer shows. I did however find out about a backyard emerging art sale.  I was maybe expecting more art and less yard-selling but it was the hipster place to be.  Apparently during the year the house is used as a gallery - seems to be very reminiscent of the Commonwealth Gallery like we had here.  There were tons of young artists selling anything from art to t-shirts to arranged junk piles that looked like weird found object installations if you looked hard enough.  Well, the art might not have been amazing but it was nice to visit another city and see what was going on within the artist community.

What at first seemed to be just junk in the yard was really placed art pieces.

Among the bikes were cut-out horses grazing in the background and a giant constructed flower.

Chicago seems to have a very well rounded art community that promotes young artists: ranging from backyard-artist run galleries to the museums showing local artists.  Keep up the good work Chicago!

Toronto Canada has a big Garage and Alley Art weekend...I believe it is the beginning of August...I remember reading about it in NOW magazine which is their version of Metro Times, or Real Detroit. But I really believe there was more art then junk. People rent out their garages that line the old alleys behind houses in what I thought was the Kensington Market area...needless to say I was sorry I missed it. The Chicago one somes fun too!!!

Wow, what a crappy looking mess. Is this what "art" is about? No wonder they're starving.

Sometimes, when there's nothing to write about, the best decision is to not write.
