Commonwealth Gallery
It is the "Last Show" so there will be no excuses if you don't make it out to the Commonwealth Gallery this Saturday! The last show will be a grouping of all the gallery artists that have shown in the house transformed gallery. The last show was quite the hipster art scene as artists gathered in the house filled with intimate art. Sculptural topped cupcakes, sparkly puff painted drawings, rendered drawings on etch-a-sketches, and a laptop that scrambled New American Painting artists' statements with a program designed specifically for reassembling the text into repetitive, sometimes incoherent statements.
Detroit is such a wonderful place when things like this come together. The fact that someone can turn their own house into a gallery for one night of great art and conversation is wonderful and a shame it has to end! I was talking with an artist at the last show about the gallery ending and they brought up a good point: Yes, this space is coming to an end but another will appear....Detroit is a sometimes a seemly dead place but it is also a place where the closeness of an art community and open, affordable spaces can slowly achieve recognition. It is just a shame that the momentum always starts and stops.
